The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly very close to locking up their captain to a long-term extension.

"He's pretty close [to signing]. As close as you can, considering the parties involved thought it would be done prior to the Christmas break. It will get done, at least that was the message I received. It's going to get done. There are always complications and both sides are always going to squeeze until that pen hits the paper. But I'd be more surprised in in a week from now we're still talking about it."
"I think it's [the contract] going to be seven years"
"If Dion Phaneuf was going to go to the open market, he'd get seven years and get better than $7 million, if Leafs' fans like it or not."
The 28-year-old veteran, who is in the final season of a six-year, $39 million contract, has 3 goals and 13 points in 37 games in 2013-14.
