"He's pretty close [to signing]. As close as you can, considering the parties involved thought it would be done prior to the Christmas break. It will get done, at least that was the message I received. It's going to get done. There are always complications and both sides are always going to squeeze until that pen hits the paper. But I'd be more surprised in in a week from now we're still talking about it."

"I think it's [the contract] going to be seven years"

...

"If Dion Phaneuf was going to go to the open market, he'd get seven years and get better than $7 million, if Leafs' fans like it or not."

The 28-year-old veteran, who is in the final season of a six-year, $39 million contract, has 3 goals and 13 points in 37 games in 2013-14.

Phaneuf doesn't want contract to be a 'distraction'

Heading into the final year of his current contract, Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf has been the subject of much discussion since his team was eliminated in the opening round of the 2013 playoffs by the Boston Bruins.

Specifically, Phaneuf's potential renewal has been a hot topic in the city, with fans on either side of the fence when asked if the hard-hitting defenseman should be re-signed by the club.

For his part, the 28-year-old wants to stay with the team.

That was his message as he sat down for a wide-ranging interview with Sportsnet. The polarizing blue-liner discussed everything from his contract status to his involvement at Team Canada's Olympic camp.

Last season, Phaneuf recorded 28 points (9 goals, 19 assists) in 48 games, which was good enough for tenth in league scoring amongst defensemen.

The upcoming year will see him register a cap hit of $6.5 million.
