Texas Tech F Jordan Tolbert transferring to SMU

DALLAS (AP) Forward Jordan Tolbert is transferring from Texas Tech to SMU, with the Mustangs hoping he will be eligible to play next season.

Tolbert averaged 10.7 points and 5.7 rebounds in three seasons as a starter. He was the second-leading scorer and rebounder for the Red Raiders this past season. He led Texas Tech at 11.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game as a freshman.

Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith released Tolbert from his scholarship, and SMU is seeking a waiver that would make him eligible next season. Otherwise, Tolbert will have to sit out until 2015-16.

The Mustangs were surprisingly left out of the NCAA tournament and reached the championship of the NIT, losing to Minnesota in Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown's second season.

Report: Texas Tech F Jordan Tolbert to transfer to SMU, may be eligible next season

Mar 31, 10:55 AM

Forward Jordan Tolbert, who applied for and was granted a transfer from Texas Tech last week, has reportedly chosen Southern Methodist University as his next and last college stop. After three years with the Red Raiders, Tolbert has just one year of eligibility left.

If Tolbert is in fact declared eligible for next season, it will be a big boost to the frontcourt of the Mustangs, who, under coach Larry Brown, are enjoying their best season in 25 years. SMU went 26-9, finished third in the brand new American Athletic Conference, and, after bowing out in the first round of the AAC tournament, have made a run to the NIT's final four.

Tolbert was a paragon of consistency in his tenure with Texas Tech. He averaged 10.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game this season, right in line with his career averages of 10.7 and 5.7, respectively. The Red Raiders went 14-18 and finished ninth in the Big 12.

Texas Tech F Tolbert, G Hannahs to transfer next season

Mar 26, 4:41 PM

After reportedly granting the release of guard Dusty Hannahs on Monday, the Texas Tech Red Raiders will lose a second top-four scorer from this season as forward Jordan Tolbert has also applied for a transfer from the program.

Much like Hannahs, the school will oblige Tolbert's request should he find a suitor outside the Big 12.

Tolbert was the Red Raiders' second-leading scorer last season, pouring in 10.7 points per game while ripping down nearly six boards.

The 6-foot-7, 225-pound forward lost his father last year and his decision to leave Texas Tech is rooted in being closer to home, according to Chris Level of Red Raider Sports.
