NBA Draft Profile: John Jenkins
John Jenkins - SG – 6'4, 212lbs.
Vanderbilt
John Jenkins' meal ticket in the NBA is undoubtedly his jump shot. He can shoot from the parking lot and his fundamentally sound release led to excellent shooting percentages in college. Jenkins shot 43.9% from beyond the arc, while taking an average of 8.7 three-pointers per game in this his junior season. His step-back jumper would make any street-baller envious and he has no problem knocking down shots with a hand or two in his face.
He won't see the same volume of shots in the NBA, which means he must be prepared to bring instant offence off of the bench early in his career. Jenkins doesn't have the upside of many other shooters in this draft because he lacks elite athleticism. This hurts him on both ends of the floor, as he struggles to get to the rim and defend his own position. He will always draw at least one defender, but if he wants to become an impact player at the next level, his foot speed, handles and passing must all improve dramatically.
ESPN's Chad Ford writes: “Most scouts believe Jenkins is the best shooter in the draft (a few give Kentucky Wildcats guard Doron Lamb the edge). The question is whether Jenkins can be more than a spot-up shooter.”
