LeBron James wins third MVP award

LeBron James has been officially announced as the National Basketball Association's Most Valuable Player. It's the third time James has won the award in the past four seasons, and the first time he has taken the honour as a member of the Miami Heat.

It's also the first MVP award in Heat franchise history. LeBron is expected to be presented with the trophy by Commissioner David Stern before Miami hosts Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against Indiana on Sunday.

James becomes the eighth player to win the award at least three times, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Moses Malone.
