Ryder Hesjedal becomes first Canadian to win Giro d'Italia

Ryder Hesjedal has become the first Canadian to win the Giro d'Italia, overcoming a 31-second deficit on the final day of the race to finish with a winning time of 91:39:02, 16 seconds ahead of Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez.

In one of the closest finishes in Giro d'Italia history, Hesjedal's time final stage time of 34:15 was fast enough to hold off Rodriguez, who rode a 35:02 on Sunday.

The 31-year-old hails from Victoria.
