GSP draws parallels between McGregor and Sonnen

Conor McGregor is Chael Sonnen 2.0.

Not necessarily based on their successes in the cage - McGregor's potential seems limitless compared to Sonnen's above-average career - but by the way they've used charisma, and pro wrestling-esque mic skills, to fast-track their respective UFC campaigns.

Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre definitely sees the similarities between the two, and even compared McGregor's upcoming bout with Jose Aldo to Sonnen's legendary feud with Anderson Silva.

"I think, if I can make a comparison, of you (Sonnen), and Anderson Silva, I don't know if I'm right, but it seems like maybe McGregor got into Aldo's head a little bit," St-Pierre said on Sonnen's podcast, according to MMAFighting.com's David St. Martin. "I don't know (if McGregor can beat Aldo). I guess we'll find out. Aldo is a very smart guy, but Conor McGregor, the way he talks trash, there is a purpose to it."

Sonnen used pre-fight antics to burrow his way into Silva's psyche prior to their first bout at UFC 117, coming tantalizingly close to upsetting the Brazilian legend before ultimately succumbing to a fifth round triangle-armbar.

"Most of the guys who have fought Jose Aldo, they've been intimidated," St-Pierre said. "Aldo has an aura of invincibility. A little bit like Anderson Silva had back in the day before you fought him. I think (McGregor) is mentally trying to break that aura of invincibility, but we'll see. You need to break it physically, not mentally. It's going to be a very interesting fight. A very nice clash of styles."
