McGregor wanted to turn down 'The Ultimate Fighter'
The original plan for the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter" was to pit Conor McGregor against Chad Mendes.
This, of course, was the proposal before UFC 189, when a rib injury suffered by Jose Aldo necessitated the immediate matchup of Mendes and McGregor months before it was originally planned.
Following McGregor's victory over Mendes, the newly minted interim featherweight champion found himself without a rival coach for the well-worn reality show, so the UFC decided to replace Mendes with his Team Alpha Male teammate, Urijah Faber.
Initially, McGregor wasn't on board with the move.
"Before the fight I was excited. A few weeks before hand there was a few different options. Potentially it should have been, Jose (Aldo) should have showed up and it should be me coaching against Chad (Mendes) for the next fight. That was the original plan," McGregor told FOX Sports' Damon Martin.
"Then obviously what happened, Jose pulled (out) and it just threw the plans up into the air. Then, they give me Urijah (Faber) as the coach, they won't let me fight him, so my energy was gone from it. I did not want to do it. It did not mean anything to me."
Instead of fighting Faber at the end of the show, McGregor will finally get a chance to sling leather with Jose Aldo at UFC 194 in a title unification bout.
