UFC on Fox 13 on Dec. 13 gets trio of heavyweight bouts

Gary A. Vasquez / USA Today Sports

If you plan on watching UFC on Fox 13 on Dec. 13 from Phoenix, here's hoping you're a fan of the UFC heavyweight division. In the past few days, the promotion has announced three enticing fights for the card, all featuring notable heavyweights.

The main event will see former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos take on 12-1 Stipe Miocic, who has won three consecutive fights. dos Santos (16-3) has dropped two of his past three fights, but both were title fight losses to Cain Velasquez, hardly embarrassing blemishes. Miocic will be looking for his biggest win to date as he looks to re-establish his footing near the top of the division, and perhaps putting him in line for a future title shot.

Also on the card will be the only man to defeat Miocic: 7-foot Dutchman Stefan Struve. Struve (25-6) draws the struggling Alistair Overeem (37-14 [1]), who has dropped three of his last four fights. Another loss could mark the end of Overeem's UFC tenure, while a win for Struve would be his first since 2012, due to issues with an enlarged heart that have kept him out of the octagon for the most part.

The final heavyweight fight announced won't have nearly the fallout that the former two could, but should be a fun one anyway. Matt Mitrione (8-3) will look to land his third consecutive victory when he stands opposite former title contender Gabriel Gonzaga (16-8). Gonzaga had won five of six fights before losing to Miocic in January, and will be looking to prove himself worthy of remaining in top-10 consideration.

With heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez set for a title defense against Fabricio Werdum just weeks before, on Nov. 15, the UFC on FOX 13 card could go a long way to determining the UFC's next set of bouts in the division.
