Cormier wants interim title shot against Gustafsson if Jones doesn't sign contract

While Dana White and the UFC continue to wait for Jon Jones to sign on for his next fight, Daniel Cormier has another idea in case the UFC light heavyweight champion takes too long to put pen to paper.

Fresh off a dominant win over Dan Henderson at UFC 173, Cormier has made it clear that he's done enough to earn a light heavyweight title shot but says he'd take an interim belt if Jones continues to stall his fight with Alexander Gustafsson.

"I know this will probably be unpopular, but if [Jones] won't sign, whether it be for money or a lack of wanting to fight the kid, I'll fight Alexander Gustafsson," Cormier told SportsWorldNews.com. "But it should be for the interim title."

With wins over some of the top heavyweights in the UFC, Cormier moved down to 205 pounds in February to pursue a title shot against Jones. The 35-year-old would have easily earned a title shot at heavyweight already if not for the fact his close friend and training partner Cain Velasquez is the division's champion.

Cormier also told media at the UFC 173 post-fight press conference that he would rather wait for his light heavyweight title shot with the winner of Jones-Gustafsson, but he hasn't completely shut the door on another fight before then.
