UFC to debut in Edmonton with PPV show on Sept. 9

Tom Szczerbowski / US PRESSWIRE

The Octagon will land in Edmonton, Alberta, for the first time when the Rogers Place arena hosts UFC 216 on Sept. 9, according to a press release.

It's the second event announced for Canada in 2017, with UFC Fight Night 105, headlined by Derrick Lewis vs. Travis Browne, taking place in Halifax this past February.

While this is the UFC's first trip to Edmonton, the promotion has visited Alberta before. In July 2012, Renan Barao won a five-round unanimous decision over Urijah Faber to defend his interim bantamweight championship at UFC 149 in front of 16,000 fans at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

The UFC's parent company, Zuffa, has also previously brought a World Extreme Cagefighting event to Edmonton, per Sportsnet's James Lynch. The now-defunct promotion held WEC 49 at the former Rexall Place (now the Northlands Coliseum) on June 20, 2010.

The press release didn't mention any prospective bouts for UFC 216.
