Bellator signs Michael McDonald

Paul Abell / US PRESSWIRE

Bellator has added another top-10 contender to its roster.

On Friday, the promotion confirmed via Twitter that it has signed one-time UFC bantamweight title challenger Michael McDonald to a multi-fight deal.

The news was initially reported by ESPN's Brett Okamoto.

McDonald was recently granted his release from the UFC, explaining that he was frustrated with the "dishonest" practices of the organization that he called home for the better part of the last six years. The 26-year-old was No. 8 in the UFC's official rankings upon being let out of his contract.

McDonald compiled a 6-3 record in nine UFC appearances, including a title shot against Renan Barao in February 2013 that he lost by fourth-round submission. "Mayday" alternated wins and losses over his last six Octagon outings.

McDonald's career has also been hindered by several injuries that rendered him inactive from December 2013 until January 2016.

Neither a date nor an opponent have been announced yet for McDonald's Bellator debut.
