Garbrandt eyes superfight with Aldo: 'I would like to test his chin'

Now that he's moved to the top of the bantamweight food chain, Cody Garbrandt is looking to make the most of his reign.

The 25-year-old captured the division title with a unanimous decision over luminary Dominick Cruz at UFC 207 last month, and hopes to translate his newfound status into a shot at knocking off another elite fighter - undisputed featherweight king Jose Aldo - while time is on his side.

"I'm the bantamweight champion. It's about taking care of myself and you have a short window of opportunity in this game. I understand that," Garbrandt told FOX Sports' Damon Martin. "I love to fight and I love to entertain. So whatever the best matchup is for the UFC and for me, we'll get on the same page and go from there.

"If Jose Aldo wants to get it, I can go up to 145 and beat another legend, too."

The Brazilian owns wins over a couple of Garbrandt's Team Alpha Male cohorts - Urijah Faber and Chad Mendes - which only gives the young knockout artist further incentive to push for the matchup.

"Jose Aldo has some wins over my teammates. He's good, he's a legend. I would like to test his chin. I know he's got good striking but I'm fast, powerful, and I'm a better martial artist. It would be a good fight. Mixing that up, 135 and 145, I'm young enough that I can go up. But it's whatever."

Before the superfight can materialize, both Garbrandt and Aldo have some business to tend to. "No Love" is set to coach "TUF 25" opposite TJ Dillashaw in the spring before meeting him in the Octagon, while the featherweight king is expected to face interim champ Max Holloway in a title unification bout.

But the way Garbrandt sees it, there's no better time than the present to angle for a date with Aldo, who's still at the peak of his powers and widely considered the sport's greatest featherweight.

"I look at it like this - Jose Aldo isn't going to have that many more years to go and I don't want to get him outside his prime," Garbrandt said. "He's looking great, he had a great fight with Frankie Edgar, probably one of the toughest guys in the UFC. I don't know how long he's going to be around fighting for so why not make this matchup?

"Look at the (Floyd) Mayweather-(Manny) Pacquiao fight. They should have fought each other years and years ago. I'm not comparing us to Mayweather and Pacquiao, and boxing is a different sport, but why not make the superfights? Why not?"
