Patrick tops Ray, Luque KOs Urbina in UFC Brasilia Fight Pass prelims

Lightweight Bout: Alan Patrick def. Stevie Ray via unanimous decision

Alan Patrick needed nothing but his grappling fundamentals to best Stevie Ray.

He didn't quite put on a clinic for his fellow countrymen in attendance, but Patrick shook off an armbar and a guillotine attempt to outgrapple Ray for his second straight victory. "Nuguette" maintained top position for the better part of three rounds, doing just enough throughout to deter referee Mario Yamasaki from bringing the fight back to the feet.

A game Ray nearly beat Patrick with the armbar in the opening round, only for the Brazilian to escape and put the Scot on his back and steal the frame on two scorecards.

"Braveheart," returning from a year-long layoff, could not establish any rhythm on his feet, as Patrick repeatedly took the fight to the ground as soon as his strikes hit pay dirt. Ray attempted a guillotine and tried to take the Brazilian's back to close the second, only to be smothered on the canvas for the entirety of Round 3.

Ray's first UFC blemish drops his promotional record to 3-1.

Welterweight Bout: Vicente Luque def. Hector Urbina via 1st-round KO

Vicente Luque didn't need his submission skills for this one.

Fighting in his home country of Brazil for the first time in over two years, Luque made his friends and family in the audience proud with a hellacious first-round knockout of Hector Urbina.

Luque simply walked Urbina down before making him pay for his lackadaisical defense with a flurry of punches. A killer right hand found Urbina's chin, shutting him down instantly.

The grappling-minded Luque had a 2-1 UFC record heading into his bout against Urbina, with both of his wins coming by submission. He can now cross an Octagon KO off of his bucket list.

It was the third straight victory for the 24-year-old Luque since losing a decision in his UFC debut against Michael Graves.

Urbina has now lost his last two bouts.

Lightweight Bout: Gregor Gillespie def. Glaico Franca via unanimous decision

Gregor Gillespie had to make his UFC debut an ugly three-round grind to secure the victory.

"The Gift" rode his D-1 NCAA wrestling to best Glaico Franca, resorting to takedowns after working his jab against the lankier Brazilian. Gillespie never quite overcame Franca's reach advantage during the striking exchanges, opting to take the Brazilian to the canvas as soon as things got hairy on the feet. The New Yorker briefly flirted with disaster in the middle round when he ate a hard knee, but quickly recovered and returned the action to the ground.

In the striking exchanges, Gillespie kept a tight repertoire, working little more than his jab and right cross to set up his takedowns. He didn't inflict much damage on the ground, but dictated where the fight went for almost its entirety to preserve his spotless record.

When the fight was standing, Franca pressured the diminutive Gillespie enough to steal a round on the scorecards, but his constant efforts to defend his opponent's takedowns sapped his energy. He'd spend most of the bout's latter half on his back, dropping his second straight fight as a result.

His UFC record now stands at 1-2.
