Diaz submitted Conor McGregor this past March for his first loss in the UFC. Within two weeks of that meeting, the wheels were in motion for a rematch.

UFC president Dana White has called for McGregor to return to featherweight to defend his title, which he has yet to do since winning it from Jose Aldo last December. Both of McGregor's matches with Diaz have taken place at 170 pounds, with Aldo winning an interim 145-pound belt in his absence.

McGregor's coach John Kavanagh has suggested that the third Diaz match take place at 155 pounds, but after McGregor has had the chance to fight lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and potentially bring a belt into the trilogy finale.
