Varner confirms WEC rematch Cerrone in September

Former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner will get another shot at Donald (Cowboy) Cerrone on Sept. 30.

Varner confirmed the mixed martial arts matchup via Twitter.

"So my next fight will be a rematch with Donald Cerrone," he said. "I hope to be the co-main sept 30. So any questions that were left after the last fight will be answered sept 30!"

Varner (16-3-3 with two no contests) won a split decision over Cerrone in January 2009 in a fight that was stopped in the fifth round after Varner, then champion, was unable to continue after an illegal knee to the head.

Varner did not fight the rest of the year because of a string of injuries, then lost his title to Ben (Smooth) Henderson last January. His last outing was a draw with Kamal Shalorus last month in Edmonton.

Cerrone (11-3 with one no contest) is 2-2 since the Varner fight, with both losses to Henderson.

The Varner-Cerrone rematch would be part of WEC 51, following WEC 50 which is slated for Aug. 18 in Las Vegas.

There have been reports that the card will be held in Broomfield, Colo., with a main event featuring featherweight champion Jose Aldo against Manny Gamburyan.
