Demetrious Johnson beats Ian McCall in rematch
SUNRISE, Fla. - There was no doubting the result this time.
Demetrious (Mighty Mouse) Johnson defeated Ian McCall at UFC on FX 3 in a rematch Friday, earning him a chance to fight for the new 125-pound title.
Johnson (15-2-1) earned a unanimous decision against McCall (11-3-1) after three rounds and will meet Joseph Benavidez for the title.
"It's good man. You know I got that moustache out of my life," said Johnson, referring to McCall's facial hair.
The victory should provide some vindication for Johnson.
At a UFC card in Australia in March, Johnson was awarded the decision against McCall only to find out later that the judges' scores were mistabulated and the bout was a draw.
"I made a couple mistakes but you know I was able to get back to my feet where I'm strong and keep my balance and just let my hands go and just believe in my coaches," said Johnson.
Earlier, Canadian welterweight Sean (The Punisher) Pierson won a unanimous decision against Jake Hecht.
Pierson (12-6), from Pickering, Ont., had lost his previous two fights but found his form against Hecht (11-4).
"I really wanted to push the pace with him to test him there. He was definitely a better wrestler than I thought, but I felt like I countered it well with my jiu-jitsu," said Pierson, who added he's hoping the result gives him a chance to fight at September's UFC 152 at Toronto's Air Canada Centre.
"That's my hometown and I want to be on that card so bad for my fans in Ontario."
