2016 MLS Power Rankings: Weeks 4-5

Weeks 4 and 5 of the 2016 MLS season were separated by an international-window break, so a handful of teams had two fixtures to consider in this round of our Power Ranking.

Orlando City took the top of the Eastern Conference table with a big 4-1 win over the Portland Timbers, the slumping Seattle Sounders beat the surging Montreal Impact, too. Unfortunately, the referees once again made themselves a talking point in the last few weeks.

Here's how each team ranks after Weeks 4 and 5 of MLS action:

1. Sporting Kansas City (-)

  • Last Week: 2-1 loss vs. Real Salt Lake
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, April 9 at NY Red Bulls (7 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
3-1-0 5 3

We're going to assume that losing to Real Salt Lake was a one-off for this otherwise mighty side, and with Benny Feilhaber back in the mix, Sporting KC is more dangerous than ever.

2. FC Dallas (+4)

  • Last Week: 3-0 win vs. D.C. United, 1-1 draw vs. Columbus
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, April 9 vs. San Jose (9 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
3-1-1 8 6

Dallas stuttered just a touch right off the top, but five games into the season it's now clear this young, athletic side is something special. Having Maxi Urruti up top certainly helps, too.

3. Montreal Impact (-1)

  • Last Week: 1-0 loss vs. Seattle
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, April 9 vs. Columbus (4 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-2-0 6 5

Without Didier Drogba, Montreal can still go head-to-head against any team in the league without much worry, but when the moment calls for a difference maker, not having the former Chelsea striker playing certainly hurts.

4. Orlando City (+8)

  • Last Week: 4-1 win vs. Portland
  • Next MLS Match: Friday, April 8 at Philadelphia (7 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-0-2 8 4

Orlando City captain Kaka returned to the fray this week, and with him came a mighty roar from the Lions in the form of a 4-1 trumping of the MLS Cup-winning Portland Timbers. Adrian Heath's side looks sharp and dangerous.

5. LA Galaxy (-2)

  • Last Week: 0-0 draw vs. Vancouver
  • Next MLS Match: Sunday, April 10 vs. Portland (9:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-1-1 7 3

Without Robbie Keane, Giovani Dos Santos, and Steven Gerrard, the LA Galaxy still showed signs of dominance, though not enough to earn any points. Still, this team is a matchbox waiting to catch fire.

6. Real Salt Lake (+3)

  • Last Week: 2-1 win vs. Sporting KC
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, April 9 vs. Colorado (9:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-0-2 8 6

A healthy, in-form Joao Plata is an absolute treat to watch, and Real Salt Lake is thriving for it. Yura Movsisyan is quickly finding his scoring feet too, making RSL a team worth watching for.

7. Vancouver Whitecaps (+6)

  • Last Week: 1-0 win vs. Houston, 0-0 draw vs. LA Galaxy
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, April 9 at D.C. United (5:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-2-1 6 6

Down a man for an hour of action, the Vancouver Whitecaps took what was an all-too-frequent disadvantage this season and put on a resilient performance to scrape out a point against the Galaxy. Not too shabby.

8. Philadelphia Union (-1)

  • Last Week: 1-0 loss vs. Chicago
  • Next MLS Match: Friday, April 8 vs. Orlando City (7 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-2-0 5 4

It's tough to fault the Philadelphia Union for losing away at the Chicago Fire, considering it was anything but warm and toasty at Toyota Park.

9. Portland Timbers (-5)

  • Last Week: 4-1 loss vs. Orlando
  • Next MLS Match: Sunday, April 10 at LA Galaxy (9:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-2-1 6 9

Is it too early to say the 2015 MLS Cup champions will not be repeating the feat in 2016? Maybe. But it's certainly tempting.

10. Toronto FC (-5)

  • Last Week: 1-0 loss vs. Colorado
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, April 9 at New England (4 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-2-1 4 4

Like Vancouver, Toronto FC was also down a man for much of their fixture in this round of action. Unlike Vancouver, Toronto succumbed to their disadvantage. Not even Sebastian Giovinco could pull them out of a 1-0 deficit.

11. New England Revolution (+3)

  • Last Week: 1-1 draw vs. NYCFC, 1-0 win vs. Red Bulls
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, April 9 vs. Toronto FC (4 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-1-3 5 7

The Revs have perfected the art of the draw, but a nice little 1-0 win over the Red Bulls gives this team a much-needed victory to celebrate.

12. San Jose Earthquakes (-1)

  • Last Week: 1-1 draw vs. D.C. United
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, April 9 at FC Dallas (9 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-1-1 5 5

San Jose has very few star players, but the team continues to score some very pretty goals. This time around, Adam Jahn gets the nod.

13. New York City FC (+3)

  • Last Week: 1-1 draw vs. New England
  • Next MLS Match: Sunday, April 10 vs. Chicago (7 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-1-2 7 7

NYCFC is benefiting from the form of midfielder Tommy McNamara and the small field dimensions at Yankee Stadium, but when will Frank Lampard grace us with his presence?

14. New York Red Bulls (-6)

  • Last Week: 1-0 loss vs. New England
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, April 9 vs. Sporting KC (7 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-3-0 4 9

Nine goals conceded, three losses, and with almost its entire back four injured, the New York Red Bulls are struggling. Time to splash some of that sweet, sweet GAM/TAM?

15. Colorado Rapids (+2)

  • Last Week: 1-0 win vs. Toronto FC
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, April 9 at Real Salt Lake (9:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-1-1 3 2

We're supposed to believe that the Rapids will have a redemption year this season, and early results point to a not-last-place finish. But we'll see. We'll see.

16. Chicago Fire (+3)

  • Last Week: 1-0 win vs. Philadelphia
  • Next MLS Match: Sunday, April 10 at NYCFC (7 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-1-2 5 5

Chicago won a game! Chicago won a game! Chicago won a ...

17. Houston Dynamo (-7)

  • Last Week: 1-0 loss vs. Vancouver
  • Next MLS Match: Sunday, April 10 vs. Seattle (4 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-2-1 11 8

The Houston Dynamo hype was cranked up to high after a Texas Derby dismantling of FC Dallas, but reality has settled in once again. Despite scoring a league-leading 11 goals, Houston has only one win to its name.

18. Seattle Sounders (+2)

  • Last Week: 1-0 win vs. Montreal
  • Next MLS Match: Sunday, April 10 at Houston (4 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-3-0 3 5

Clint Dempsey soothed U.S. fans' nerves with a goal against Guatemala during World Cup qualifying, then came back home to Seattle and earned the club its first win with a header. What a champ. Now do it again.

19. Columbus Crew (-4)

  • Last Week: 1-1 draw vs. FC Dallas
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, April 9 at Montreal (4 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-2-2 3 5

Kei Kamara feeds off crosses into the box. So, naturally, the Crew only completed one cross against FC Dallas last weekend. Back to the drawing board, boys.

20. D.C. United (-2)

  • Last Week: 3-0 loss vs. FC Dallas, 1-1 draw vs. San Jose
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, April 9 vs. Vancouver (5:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-2-3 3 9

No wins, few goals, three draws, no hope. D.C. United has hit rock bottom once again. Ben Olsen's days might be numbered.
