MLS SuperDraft: Reviewing all 20 picks of the 1st round

Reuters

The first round of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft is in the books.

Though another 60 players will be selected over the final three rounds of the draft, the focus will inevitably fall upon the youngsters taken with the opening 20 selections on Thursday.

Here's a quick look at each of those picks.

1. Chicago Fire - Jack Harrison, MF (Wake Forest / Generation Adidas)

Read more about this pick here.

Everyone expected the Chicago Fire to pick up Georgetown defender Joshua Yaro with the first pick, but they shocked the league by selecting Harrison instead.

Then the Fire acquired the fourth overall draft pick from New York City FC in exchange for allocation money and an undisclosed player - and that player ended up being Harrison, the first overall draft pick, now at NYCFC.

2. Philadelphia Union - Joshua Yaro, DF (Georgetown / Generation Adidas)

The Union weren't set to select second overall, but orchestrated a trade with the Colorado Rapids to acquire this pick, sending general allocation money to Pablo Mastroeni's side. The Union weren't expecting Yaro to be available, but with Harrison off at first, Philadelphia didn't hesitate to pull the trigger.

3. Philadelphia Union - Keegan Rosenberry, DF (Georgetown)

Keegan Rosenberry wasn't projected to go this high, but the Union couldn't resist bringing together these two Georgetown defenders. Rosenberry, a right full-back by trade, brings instant cohesion with Yaro, a trait rarely procured on draft day.

4. Chicago Fire - Brandon Vincent, DF (Stanford)

Chicago might have traded away its first overall pick to NYCFC, but the Fire didn't leave the SuperDraft empty-handed; with the fourth pick, Chicago selected left full-back Vincent, who's currently away with the U.S. national team.

5. Real Salt Lake - Omar Holness, MF (North Carolina / Generation Adidas)

Real Salt Lake brought the SuperDraft back to a semblance of normalcy, picking up Holness with their fifth overall natural draft pick. A versatile player, the Jamaican international should be a good fit for an RSL midfield that desperately needs an injection of youth and pace.

6. Philadelphia Union - Fabian Herbers, MF (Creighton / Generation Adidas)

Philadelphia wrapped up its first-round shenanigans by selecting German midfielder Herbers, a Generation Adidas player who won't count against the cap.

7. Orlando City - Richie Laryea, MF (Akron / Generation Adidas)

Read more about this pick here.

Laryea is Canadian, from Toronto, and comes from Sigma FC. Sound familiar? That's how 2015 Rookie of the Year Cyle Larin came through in his youth career, and Orlando is hoping that same path proves fruitful a second time around.

8. San Jose Earthquakes - Andrew Tarbell, GK (Clemson / Generation Adidas)

San Jose needed a goalkeeper, saw a goalkeeper with Generation Adidas perks, and drafted said goalkeeper. Tarbell is 6-foot-3 and might be ready to start - not a bad pick, all things considered.

9. Toronto FC - Tsubasa Endoh, MF (Maryland)

This quote from Endoh just about sums up Toronto FC's drafting philosophy:

Never change, TFC. Never change.

10. New England Revolution - Jordan McCrary, DF (North Carolina)

Pretty much a standard day at the draft for the New England Revolution - find role player, pick role player, hope role player becomes a competent cog in the Revolution machine.

11. D.C. United - Julian Buescher, MF (Syracuse / Generation Adidas)

D.C. United acquired this pick by trading targeted allocation money to Sporting Kansas City, then selected Buescher, a German midfielder with Generation Adidas perks. This was the only trade on the day that didn't send heads spinning.

12. Chicago Fire - Jonathan Campbell, DF (North Carolina)

Read more about this pick here.

Not to be outdone by Philadelphia, Chicago spurred on the madness, trading its 15th and 33rd picks and its spot in the MLS allocation order to Colorado for the Rapids' 12th and 22nd picks. The Fire then selected Campbell, ending their first round with a pair of new defenders.

13. Orlando City - Hadji Barry, FW (Central Florida)

Read more about this pick here.

Orlando acquired this pick by sending some targeted allocation money and a second-round pick D.C. United's way, then drafted Barry. The Guinean striker won't have to travel very far - he's already in Florida, enjoying the sun.

14. Montreal Impact - Kyle Fisher, DF (Clemson)

Read more about this pick here.

With Didier Drogba's future up in the air, it made more sense for Montreal to select a striker instead of a defender, right?

Evidently not.

15. Colorado Rapids - Emmanuel Appiah, MF (Cincinnati)

Read more about this pick here.

Another pick, another confusing trade. This time, the Rapids, the Chicago Fire, and the Seattle Sounders coordinated, with the Fire sending a player to Seattle in exchange for the 15th pick and some general allocation money. The Fire then flipped the 15th pick to Colorado for pick No. 12, and the Rapids took a chance on Ghanaian midfielder Appiah.

16. Vancouver Whitecaps - Cole Seiler, DF (Georgetown)

Read more about this pick here.

The third Georgetown defender alongside Yaro and Rosenberry, Seiler joins a Vancouver Whitecaps team looking for defensive reinforcements after losing Steven Beitashour to Toronto FC.

17. FC Dallas - Ryan Herman, GK (Washington)

Read more about this pick here.

FC Dallas traded goalkeeper Dan Kennedy to the LA Galaxy earlier in the offseason, then added a goalkeeper in the draft, basically telling the league that Jesse Gonzalez is their No. 1 between the sticks this season.

18. New York Red Bulls - Justin Bilyeu, DF (Southern Illinois)

Read more about this pick here.

Bilyeu will fit in nicely with the six (!) Homegrown Players the club has signed in the offseason so far.

19. Columbus Crew - Rodrigo Saravia, MF (Florida Gulf Coast)

Read more about this pick here.

Saravia's a fringe starter for a school not known for pumping out MLS-quality players, so this pick is a bit of a crap shoot, really. Maybe Gregg Berhalter saw something in Saravia no one else did.

20. Portland Timbers - Ben Polk, FW (Syracuse)

Read more about this pick here.

What does an MLS Cup-winning team need at the SuperDraft? Not much. The Timbers apparently looked at the remaining players, identified one who'd been projected to go as high as the top 10, shrugged their collective shoulders, and said, "OK, that guy."
