United States men's national team captain Michael Bradley was officially named the 2015 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year on Tuesday, marking the first time he's received the award.

"It's an honor to be selected amongst this group of players," Bradley said in a statement. "This has been a challenging year for our team, yet we continue to understand the opportunity we have to represent the United States and know how important it is that we give everything we have every time we step on the field. That's what means the most to me, and at the same time I certainly appreciate this recognition."

The Associated Press reported the news last week. Bradley's position as the face of the U.S. men's program has now been confirmed.

The 28-year-old earned his 100th cap for his country during the Gold Cup in July, becoming the 16th player to reach that milestone.

He had three goals and six assists in 18 appearances for the U.S. in 2015.

Bradley also contributed five goals in 26 appearances for Toronto FC, and guided the MLS club to its first postseason berth.

He earned 43 percent of the votes for Male Player of the Year, beating out defender Fabian Johnson (33 percent) and forward Clint Dempsey (20 percent).
