Seattle Sounders offer Stanford forward Jordan Morris record contract

Jordan Morris could become the highest-ever paid homegrown signing after the Seattle Sounders offered the Stanford University junior a record-breaking contract, according to the club's general manager, Garth Lagerwey.

Terms of the deal were not revealed. However, the current record-high salary for a homegrown signing was given to LA Galaxy forward Gyasi Zardes, who signed on for $173,000 in guaranteed compensation in 2013.

The rules of the NCAA prevent Lagerwey and the Sounders from negotiating or speaking with Morris until the end of the college season in early December. However, Lagerwey is "confident we have have a feel" of Morris' commitment.

"It's up to Jordan," Lagerwey said. "Jordan will come out when he wants to come out, and he'll go where he wants to go. We hope he signs with us, but it's out of our control."

Morris, 21, garnered plenty of hype in his non-professional career, becoming the first college player to play for the U.S. national team. The Sounders have been his preferred professional team, which he made no secret in the past - his father, Michael Morris, is the Sounders' medical director.

While he has been on Seattle's radar for quite some time, and was a member of the Sounders academy, Morris refused to go pro, wishing to play for at least two-and-a-half years at the college level while working on his degree at Stanford.

Should Morris choose to close on the lucrative deal, he would join Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins up top for the Sounders in 2016.
