3 things we learned on MLS Decision Day: Drogba dominates to close the season

With the final weekend of MLS action in the books, we take a look back at some of what we learned from the last slate of regular-season matches.

Red Bulls claim the Supporters' Shield as tables are set

MLS Decision Day is finally over and with it, the playoff picture is now clear.

The San Jose Earthquakes and Orlando City were eliminated from postseason contention on Sunday, with the New England Revolution taking the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and the Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers, and Sporting Kansas City clinching postseason berths in the West.

The New York Red Bulls celebrated clinching the 2015 Supporters' Shield after defeating the Chicago Fire 2-1 and finishing the season with 60 points. FC Dallas also finished its 2015 campaign with 60 points after defeating the Quakes 2-1, but the Red Bulls took the title with a superior goal difference.

Giovinco begins sweep of individual accolades

Mark the MLS Golden Boot off the checklist for Toronto FC star Sebastian Giovinco. With 22 goals and 16 assists, the Italian forward claimed the first of a number of individual accolades available to him this season.

His 16 assists were also enough to secure the top assist nod in 2015, with Giovinco recording one more than Philadelphia Union midfielder Cristian Maidana by season's end.

What's left for the Atomic Ant? The MLS Landon Donovan Most Valuable Player award is almost certainly his to claim, as the votes are tallied across the league. Besides that, there's the Newcomer of the Year award, which would certainly have been a lock, if not for one other player.

Fear the Scoring Drogba

If ever the fictional world of AMC's hit TV series "The Walking Dead" becomes a reality, stick close to Montreal Impact forward Didier Drogba and you'll be just fine; this Chelsea legend strolled into the box, surrounded by walkers defenders, and walked away with all the loot he needed.

Toronto FC's defenders were caught standing and watching (and, possibly, grunting and moaning) as Drogba scored an unmarked back-heel goal not once, but twice in rapid succession to give his team a 2-1 win victory at Stade Saputo.

An historic church bell, newly installed opposite the Montreal Ultras' side of the stands, tolled ominously in the span of two minutes in the second half, signalling a 401 Derby victory and securing a home game in the playoffs.

Drogba, who now has 11 goals in 11 games, will have a chance to go hunting for goals again on Thursday as the Impact host Toronto once more in the MLS playoff wild-card match.
