Canuck Report: How Canadian internationals fared in MLS this season

Reuters

It has been a great year for Canadian players this season, with plenty of quality footballers starting for their respective sides across Major League Soccer. Whether it's new players being introduced for club and country or established veterans stamping their authority on the field, here's how Canada's most prominent players performed in 2015:

Cyle Larin

Orlando City striker Cyle Larin had a record-breaking rookie season this year with his new club, scoring 17 goals to become the highest-scoring rookie in MLS history. Larin took that goal-scoring form and converted it into a starting role with the Canadian national team. Though, he failed to score in the Gold Cup in baffling fashion - a storyline he'll try to forget about going forward.

Tesho Akindele

FC Dallas forward Tesho Akindele has been an integral part of his side's incredible 2015 season, scoring five goals and recording one assist in 27 appearances. Dallas leads the Western Conference and is in the hunt for the Supporters' Shield at the time of this writing, and Akindele has been a vital contributor in that success, scoring three game-winning goals.

Russell Teibert

Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Russell Teibert helped his team during a very strong 2015 season in the Western Conference. He played a versatile piece in the Whitecaps' offence early on, when Vancouver sat at the top of the table. He hasn't scored in 22 appearances this year but he has one assist and remains a valuable option for Carl Robinson.

Jonathan Osorio

Toronto FC midfielder Jonathan Osorio has had, perhaps, the best year of any Canadian midfielder in MLS this season, which makes his exclusion from the Canadian national team roster incredibly puzzling. Osorio has shown his passing acumen and his technically-gifted footwork throughout 2015 and has shown competency in combining with Sebastian Giovinco. A CanMNT role shouldn't just be expected - it shouldn't even be a debate.

Will Johnson

Portland Timbers midfielder Will Johnson came back from a fractured fibula and tibia this season and slotted right back into the Timbers' lineup, featuring in 12 games and not really skipping a beat. Johnson will be an important figure for the national team next year, too.

Ashtone Morgan

Toronto FC left full-back Ashtone Morgan rose to prominence once more with his club after a string of injuries forced head coach Greg Vanney into some creative solutions in his back line. Morgan looked down and out over the last two years but has become a key contributor to his team once more this season, making 19 appearances in 2015.

Patrice Bernier

Montreal Impact midfielder Patrice Bernier is in the twilight years of his career and while he hasn't been quite as involved as he'd like to be, Bernier has been an integral part of the club's late-season playoff push. Bernier, 36, has featured in 19 games but has only started in six, and while his time may soon be up at Montreal, he remains the team's leader for the postseason.

Kyle Bekker

Montreal Impact midfielder Kyle Bekker is actually playing in the USL with his side's affiliate team, FC Montreal, but continues getting called up to the Canadian national team. Bekker is touted for his passing ability and his vision and while the potential is there, it helps that he has the faith of Canadian manager Benito Floro, too.

Marcel de Jong

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Marcel de Jong does a lot of the little things well, but scoring beautiful, long-range goals seems to be his best talent. He joined KC halfway through the year and has one goal for his club in 13 games, but his defensive qualities make him a well-rounded option for Peter Vermes' side.

Dwayne De Rosario

Dwayne De Rosario took his final bow from the game at the start of the 2015 season, taking on a role at his hometown team - Toronto FC - as a club ambassador. He ends his career having won four MLS Cups with the Houston Dynamo and the San Jose Earthquakes and will forever hold a special place in Toronto FC's history.
