Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch says Didier Drogba wouldn't fit with his team

It can be safely said that, after a month in Major League Soccer, Didier Drogba is a force to be reckoned with for the Montreal Impact.

But New York Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch isn't that impressed with the former Chelsea striker, claiming ahead of his side's clash with Montreal on Wednesday night that the 37-year-old Ivorian wouldn't even cut it in New York's roster.

"I don't think Drogba would fit with what we're doing here," Marsch told reporters on Tuesday, ahead of his side's match against Montreal. "He's just not in the age category that we would want. Obviously he's a great player but I think when we make big investments in this club it's going to be for the long-term process.

"I don't think we need to be as aggressive to make a splash in our market with a big name. We need to, I think, honor the team that we're becoming. Not just the immediacy but the long-term outlook. We want this to be extremely cyclical, we want players to be here for years on years. We want them to fit into our system and understand how to grow into our system."

The statement shows clearly the change this current Red Bulls outfit has undergone in its transfer policies. The club had no problem signing a fellow aged Premier League star in Thierry Henry, who retired at the end of the 2014 season.

Drogba has seven goals in seven games and an MLS Player of the Month honor to his name already. He'll be looking to add to that tally against New York, as the Impact continue their chase for a postseason berth.

With a win over New York and another win on Saturday against the Colorado Rapids, Montreal can clinch early qualification for the playoffs. Perhaps Drogba can then show Marsch how right or wrong his assessment truly is.
