VIDEO: Red Bulls fool opponent, score with innovative (but illegal) corner routine

Reuters

The New York Red Bulls tried something a bit different during a set-piece routine on Wednesday night.

With the home side Chicago Fire leading 2-1, Red Bulls winger Lloyd Sam went to take a corner kick, tapped it with his boot, and left it for regular set-piece man Sacha Kljestan.

According to the linesman, the ball was active due to Sam having touched it with his foot, so Kljestan dribbled in from the corner and played it across the box. It was knocked in by former Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Ronald Zubar.

The goal, however, should not have stood. Sam touches it twice before Kljestan begins his assist. Law 17 of FIFA's guide for corner kicks states:

If the kicker touches the ball a second time before it has touched another player, including if the ball rebounds from a goal post, an indirect free kick shall be awarded to the opposing team in the position where the second touch occurred.

Justice was served, as the Fire went on to win the game 3-2, though the club is still rooted to the bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference.
