Frank Lampard questionable once more after leaving practice early

New York City FC midfielder Frank Lampard may be out with injury again after his quad flared up once more in training.

The former Chelsea man left practice early Tuesday and will be a gametime decision for the club's weekend encounter with D.C. United on Thursday.

Lampard made his MLS debut against the Montreal Impact at the start of August, then put in an 86-minute shift against the New York Red Bulls last week. He's recorded just 107 minutes of play this season in MLS.

Lampard, 37, is one of three Designated Players at the club, including Spanish icon David Villa, 33, and Italy's midfield maestro Andrea Pirlo, 36. The three may be getting on a bit in age, as Red Bulls fans made sure to point out, but Lampard's injury in particular seems to be a real concern - he's been questionable almost every week since joining the team in July.

Such is the duality of New York's DP dilemma that David Villa was named the league's player of the month for July, while Pirlo struggled with the basics of the sport against the Red Bulls.

With Villa on fire, Pirlo stumbling over himself, and Lampard dealing with injuries, New York City FC manager Jason Kreis is likely wondering if he'll ever get a full 90 minutes with all three of his stars on the field at the same time.
