A heat advisory and unusually high temperatures forecast for the Portland area over the weekend forced the Portland Timbers to announce a kickoff time change for Sunday's match against the San Jose Earthquakes, which was initially set to get underway at 2:00 p.m. PT.

Just how hot was it on Sunday afternoon in Portland?

Well, here's an image the Timbers published of the temperature reading on the pitch - in degrees Fahrenheit.

For those wondering, 166.4 degrees Fahrenheit translates to 74.7 degrees Celsius, while 170.9 degrees Fahrenheit converts to 77.2 degrees Celsius.

Essentially, the players would have been walking on lava had there been no change in kickoff time.

The Timbers also announced updated water measures for the match on Sunday, including:

  • Loosening of water bottle allowance policy to now include "All sealed plastic water bottles containing water and sports drinks"
  • Addition of a "cooling tent" courtesy of Metro West on the East Concourse
  • Addition of Water Stations for fans to get water on West Concourse (1) and behind the north end supporters sections (1) and the East Concourse (1)
