MLS Game Summary - Columbus at Vancouver

Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Darren Mattocks netted his first goal of the season and added an assist on Wednesday as Vancouver Whitecaps FC played to an entertaining 2-2 draw with Columbus Crew SC at BC Place.

After taking down the defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy last week, Vancouver entered the midweek clash as one of the hottest teams in Major League Soccer, looking for its fifth straight win.

But it was the visiting Crew that opened the scoring after 24 minutes when Ethan Finlay got free down the middle of the park and slid it to the right to Kei Kamara. Kamara tried to play it back to Finlay, but it took a deflection and was loose in the box before Kamara spotted it and slotted it past Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted.

The home side drew level just six minutes later when the Crew defense switched off on a throw-in on the left side of the pitch from Mattocks to Octavio Rivero, who collected the ball, did well to shield off Columbus defender Michael Parkhurst and knock it home.

Columbus regained the one-goal advantage five minutes into the second half when Justin Meram intercepted a poor clearance from Ousted and drove into the penalty area on the left side of the field before squaring it across to Kamara, who calmly slid it home for his second goal of the night.

But once again Vancouver drew level with 26 minutes remaining as Kekuta Manneh did well to beat his mark to a long ball from Pa Modou Kah at the end line. Manneh looked up and cut it back to Mattocks, who fired it past Crew goalkeeper Steve Clark.

Sensing they could find a winner, Vancouver pushed up the field, pressuring Columbus at every opportunity hoping for a turnover in the attacking third. The high-pressure approach created a handful of quality scoring chances, but a winner never came and the sides were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
