Report: Colorado hasn't made contract offer to Carles Puyol

Reuters

Maybe it was too good to be true.

After reports emerged in Spain that the Colorado Rapids made a significant contract offer in an attempt to lure former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol out of retirement, the Denver Post quotes a league source as pouring cold water on the speculation.

Puyol, 36, hung up his boots at the conclusion of last season, citing knee problems as the main reason behind his decision.

While adding the Spanish legend would be a coup in terms of name recognition, it would seem to be a superfluous move considering the Rapids, dead last in the Western Conference, are doing just fine in defense.

The club has conceded just two goals in four matches this season. It's up front, where they have yet to find the net, that Colorado desperately needs reinforcements.

Unless Puyol reincarnates himself as a striker, this move would do little more than help the Rapids at the ticket booth.
