Toronto FC loans Gilberto to Vasco da Gama
Toronto FC have agreed to loan striker Gilberto to CR Vasco da Gama for the season in a move the club was forced to make because of Major League Soccer's cap on Designated Players
The agreement, which the team announced Friday, returns the Brazilian footballer to his native country. Gilberto was the unlucky odd man out as the acquisitions of Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco, along with Michael Bradley's presence, put Toronto one Designated Player over the league's limit.
"This move was necessary in order for us to be roster and budget compliant for the start of the 2015 season. While necessary it also allows us to gain flexibility and options both today and in the future," Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said.
"We’d like to thank Gilberto for his contributions to Toronto FC and wish him well this season."
Gilberto joined the club in 2013 when he signed as a Designated Player and went on to score seven goals and recorded five assists.
