Landon Donovan may have retired at the end of the recent campaign, but his presence in MLS will remain forever.

The league announced Thursday ahead of its annual SuperDraft that the MLS MVP award has a new name to honor the former Los Angeles Galaxy superstar.

"As a child, soccer was merely an outlet for me - a way to express myself," said Donovan. "To have this prestigious award named after me is truly unimaginable. Thank you to Commissioner Garber, Major League Soccer and all of the people that have supported me along the way. I am extremely humbled by and proud of this honor."

Donovan, who played 14 seasons in the league, captured the MVP award one time in his illustrious career (2009) and was named a finalist on one other occasion (2008).

Modest numbers those may be, the American soccer icon can now take solace in the fact that his name is emblazoned permanently on the trophy.
