MLS Game Summary - Vancouver at Seattle

Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kekuta Manneh's first-half goal was the difference as Vancouver Whitecaps FC held off Seattle Sounders FC, 1-0, at CenturyLink Field on Friday, allowing the Whitecaps to retain the Cascadia Cup.

Manneh's goal also moves Vancouver back into a playoff spot, one point clear of the Portland Timbers with two matches remaining.

Seattle, meanwhile, sustained its third defeat in five games and remains tied atop the Supporters' Shield table with the Los Angeles Galaxy, although the Galaxy have a game in hand.

Vancouver's approach to the match was a defensive one with the Whitecaps not wanting to fall behind early in such a big game for the club.

Chances were at a premium for much of the match, and it wasn't until the 30th minute that either side managed a serious threat as Manneh cut into the penalty area from the left and forced Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei to make a save at his near post.

But Manneh got the better of Frei just before halftime when he drove into the box from the wing and beat a defender before sliding a shot underneath Frei and into the net.

Vancouver had a chance to extend its lead early in the second half, but Frei was able to get down and make a save with his legs to deny Erik Hurtado in a one-on-one situation.

Seattle finally managed to threaten as the second half wore on, but Kendall Waston was there in stoppage time to clear a header from the Sounders Brad Evans off the goal line, preserving the win.
