MLS Game Summary - San Jose at Vancouver

Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Pedro Morales converted a first-half penalty kick and added an assist on Wednesday as Vancouver Whitecaps FC rolled to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Western Conference rivals San Jose Earthquakes at BC Place.

Vancouver entered the match on the outside of the playoff places and struggling mightily, having gone winless in four straight without scoring a goal.

But Morales broke a 450-minute goalless drought in the 39th minute with his spot kick and youngster Kendall Waston added an insurance tally in the 56th minute to help the 'Caps jump into fifth place in the West with 37 points.

San Jose struggled to generate many quality scoring chances over the course of 90 minutes and saw their winless streak in league play extended to seven matches.

The opening goal came in the latter stages of the first half as San Jose defender Victor Bernardez knocked down Waston in the penalty area on a free kick and referee Jose Carlos Rivero pointed to the spot.

Morales stepped up and confidently ripped it into the bottom left corner with pace, easily beating San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch for his eighth goal of the season.

The 'Caps added the second goal 11 minutes into the second half when Waston got inside position on his mark and nodded a Morales corner kick down and into the bottom right corner for his first MLS goal.

The result leaves the Earthquakes in eighth place in the West with 27 points 10 points out of the final playoff spot.
