MLS Game Summary - Chivas USA at Portland

Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of first-half goals helped the Portland Timbers get back to winning ways as the club topped Chivas USA, 2-0, at Providence Park on Saturday.

Portland entered the match on the back of a 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy, but the club responded in admirable fashion as early goals from Diego Valeri and Rodney Wallace handed the Timbers their third win in their last four league outings.

Valeri opened the scoring just 10 minutes in as he took a pass from Diego Chara and advanced the ball to the edge of the penalty area before cutting it back onto his right foot and sending a dipping shot past Dan Kennedy.

Will Johnson came within inches of doubling Portland's advantage in the 25th minute when he uncorked a superb shot from distance that had Kennedy beat, but the bouncing effort came back off the post.

The Timbers eventually found a second goal as Wallace got on the end of Fanendo Adi's nifty chip and slammed home his first goal of the season.

Portland closed out the match in the second half to march on to three points, bringing the club up to 30 points on the season.

Chivas, meanwhile, drops its fourth successive league match to remain at the foot of the Western Conference table on 23 points.
