LA Galaxy acquire Jack McInerney

The LA Galaxy have added some goal-scoring to their squad, acquiring forward Jack McInerney from the Portland Timbers on Monday.

Mired by a poor start and languishing in eighth place in the Western Conference with two wins and four defeats, the Galaxy have scored just eight times in six matches.

McInerney's move south on the Pacific coast was confirmed by a statement on the Galaxy's website after the 24-year-old former U.S. youth international was put on waivers by Portland.

The Galaxy marks McInerney's fifth MLS club since he broke through in 2010 with Philadelphia, with spells at Montreal and Columbus highlighting a busy resume for a player of that age.

"Jack is a young and experienced player in MLS who has shown that he can score goals in this league," Galaxy GM Peter Vagenas said. "He will give our team valuable depth at the forward position throughout the season. We look forward to Jack joining the team this week ahead of Sunday’s game."

Depth indeed, as McInerney joins a Galaxy squad that already features attackers Giovani dos Santos, Gyasi Zardes, Jack McBean, Bradford Jamieson, Jose Villareal, and Ariel Lassiter. All six have appeared in at least one match this season for Curt Onalfo's five-time MLS Cup winners, and it appears that Lassiter may now be the odd man out.

In a little over six years in the North American top flight, McInerney has bagged 43 MLS goals including 25 while with the Union. His 36 goals before the age of 24 is the second-most in MLS history.
