New England's late leveler cancels out sensational Valeri volley

Jaime Valdez-USA TODAY Sports

The Portland Timbers' creative fulcrum, Diego Valeri, was up to his old tricks again Sunday, but his sublime opener was erased by a late equaliser from Lee Nguyen.

The Argentinian gave his side slight breathing space over the visiting New England Revolution after merely 12 minutes with a volley that showcased both his sublime technique and composure.

The Timbers were then punished for their profligacy in front of goal and inability to get the better of promising Revs debutant Joshua Smith in defense, with Nguyen scoring his third goal of the season when he roofed a rebound in the 84th minute.

Portland dropped points for the first time this campaign in the tilt, but still sits atop the Eastern Conference. The visitor, meanwhile, is averaging a point a game after winning one and drawing two in four matches.
