MLS Power Rankings, Week 3: Does Toronto's 1st win secure No. 1 spot?

Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to the 2017 MLS Power Rankings, where we rank each team after each week with consideration to form, latest results, stats, and some other intangibles to try and craft an idea of how things stand in one single table.

Here's how each team ranks after Week 3 of the 2017 season:

1. Portland Timbers (-)

  • Last Week: 4-2 win vs. Houston Dynamo
  • Next MLS Match: March 25 at Columbus (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
3-0-0 10 3

The Timbers aren't just the most in-form team at the start of the 2017 season; no, Caleb Porter's side is also playing some of the scariest soccer around.

2. FC Dallas (+1)

  • Last Week: 2-1 win vs. New England Revolution
  • Next MLS Match: April 8 vs. Minnesota (8:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-0-1 4 2

FC Dallas did well to turn around a 1-0 deficit and can now singularly focus on an oncoming match against Pachuca in the CONCACAF Champions League.

3. Toronto FC (+2)

  • Last Week: 2-0 win vs. Vancouver Whitecaps
  • Next MLS Match: March 31 vs. Sporting KC (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-0-2 4 2

Toronto FC got its first win on the board for 2017 in fine fashion with some help from the "Beast" himself, Jozy Altidore. The Reds are now back to business.

4. Seattle Sounders (-)

  • Last Week: 3-1 win vs. New York Red Bulls
  • Next MLS Match: March 31 vs. Atlanta (10:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-1-1 6 5

The Sounders made short work of their opponents from New York, with Clint Dempsey and Jordan Morris finding the back of the net before U.S. team duty.

5. New York Red Bulls (-3)

  • Last Week: 3-1 loss vs. Seattle Sounders
  • Next MLS Match: March 25 vs. Real Salt Lake (4:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-1-0 4 4

The Red Bulls fell flat against Seattle, no doubt, and both Toronto and Dallas put in much more convincing performances, so an unfortunate -3 drop follows.

6. Atlanta United (+3)

  • Last Week: 4-0 win vs. Chicago Fire
  • Next MLS Match: March 31 at Seattle (10:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-1-0 11 3

Expansion outfit? Please. Atlanta United is legit, and the rest of MLS would be wise to not take Tata Martino's side lightly. Josef Martinez is a star, rising.

7. Colorado Rapids (-1)

  • Last Week: 2-2 draw vs. Minnesota United
  • Next MLS Match: April 9 at Sporting KC (7:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-1-1 3 3

The Rapids of last season would have easily seen out a 1-0 result when faced with minnows like Minnesota and were lucky to earn even a point this week.

8. Houston Dynamo (-1)

  • Last Week: 4-2 loss vs. Portland Timbers
  • Next MLS Match: April 1 vs. NY Red Bulls (8:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-1-0 7 6

The Dynamo may be impressing with a new front line led by Erick Torres, but there's still plenty of work for Wilmer Cabrera regarding his defense.

9. New York City FC (+1)

  • Last Week: 1-1 draw vs. Montreal Impact
  • Next MLS Match: April 1 vs. San Jose (2:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-1-1 5 2

New York City FC would have wanted more from Week 3 but a draw against the Impact is just fine, for now. There's still plenty of time to grow stronger.

10. Orlando City (+2)

  • Last Week: 2-1 win vs. Philadelphia Union
  • Next MLS Match: April 1 at Columbus (4:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-0-0 3 1

Orlando City owes this win to Cyle Larin, whose brace secured all three points against the Union. Now, can Giles Barnes keep pace with the Canadian?

11. San Jose Earthquakes (-3)

  • Last Week: 2-1 loss vs. Sporting Kansas City
  • Next MLS Match: April 1 at NYCFC (2:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-1-0 5 4

San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham won't live down this miss anytime soon.

12. LA Galaxy (-1)

  • Last Week: 2-1 win vs. Real Salt Lake
  • Next MLS Match: April 1 at Vancouver (10:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-2-0 3 4

This current iteration of the LA Galaxy is certainly different from those of the past, and while there are signs of positive growth, something is still missing.

13. Sporting Kansas City (+1)

  • Last Week: 2-1 win vs. San Jose Earthquakes
  • Next MLS Match: March 31 at Toronto (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-0-2 2 1

Sporting Kansas City striker Soony Saad scored the winner against San Jose, but owes it to Lady Luck. Regardless, Benny Feilhaber had assured a result with a moment of brilliance.

14. Real Salt Lake (-1)

  • Last Week: 2-1 loss vs. LA Galaxy
  • Next MLS Match: March 25 at NY Red Bulls (4:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-2-1 1 4

Kyle Beckerman's ejection put Real Salt Lake in a hole, but it's irrelevant, since the Galaxy's Ema Boateng was playing - all his goals have come against RSL:

15. Montreal Impact (-)

  • Last Week: 1-1 draw vs. New York City FC
  • Next MLS Match: April 1 at Chicago (3:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-1-2 3 4

The Impact need to find that sharpness again if three points are to start flowing once more. Dominic Oduro seems to have it - how about Ignacio Piatti?

16. Philadelphia Union (-)

  • Last Week: 2-1 loss vs. Orlando City
  • Next MLS Match: April 1 at D.C. United (7:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-1-2 3 4

The Union are having a rough go of things early on, and will need to start firing on all cylinders if the club is to remain competitive and not fall too far behind.

17. Vancouver Whitecaps (-)

  • Last Week: 2-0 loss vs. Toronto FC
  • Next MLS Match: April 1 vs. LA Galaxy (10:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-2-1 2 5

The Whitecaps might be among the bottom-dwellers in the West this season, and newcomer Brek Shea didn't make a very positive first impression, either.

18. Columbus Crew (+3)

  • Last Week: 2-0 win vs. D.C. United
  • Next MLS Match: March 25 vs. Portland (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-1-1 4 4

Hey, a win's a win, and the Columbus Crew will take a 2-0 victory any day of the week. Gregg Berhalter would love a few more of those before the summer.

19. Chicago Fire (-1)

  • Last Week: 4-0 loss vs. Atlanta United
  • Next MLS Match: April 1 vs. Montreal (3:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-1-1 3 5

It's two steps forward, one step back for the Chicago Fire after a punishing defeat to a brand-new Atlanta side. We'll let it slide ... this week.

20. New England Revolution (-)

  • Last Week: 2-1 loss vs. FC Dallas
  • Next MLS Match: March 25 vs. Minnesota (2:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-2-0 1 3

The New England Revolution have certainly fallen from their graces in recent years and blew a lead against Dallas without putting up much of a fight.

21. D.C. United (-2)

  • Last Week: 2-0 loss vs. Columbus Crew
  • Next MLS Match: April 1 vs. Philadelphia
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-2-1 0 6

D.C. United welcomed back Luciano Acosta this week, but still haven't scored a goal this season. That's not good.

22. Minnesota United

  • Last Week: 2-2 draw vs. Colorado Rapids
  • Next MLS Match: March 25 at New England (2:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
0-2-1 4 13

A point, at last, for Minnesota United, but just a consolation for the Loons, who had taken a historic lead only to blow it one minute later against Colorado.
