Toronto FC re-signs Nick Hagglund

Toronto FC defender Nick Hagglund has been compensated for his steady performances as part of Greg Vanney's back three, signing a multi-year contract extension with the club Thursday.

The defending Eastern Conference champ announced the move, but the terms and fees weren't disclosed as per league policy.

"Nick has established himself as a very reliable defender in MLS," TFC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said. "We have watched his continual growth both as a player and person since being drafted in 2014.

Cincinnati-born, Hagglund, 24, stayed home for four years of college ball at Xavier, notching Big East Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, prompting TFC to nab him with the 10th overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.

In four campaigns with the club, Hagglund has made 69 appearances in all competitions, including all six matches in Toronto's successful playoff voyage a year ago.

"He is an important part of our club and someone that has stepped up whenever or wherever he has been needed. We are pleased to give him this well-deserved extension and ensure he remains part of Toronto FC," Bezbatchenko added.

Hagglund's new deal wasn't the only business of the day, with the club adding Finnish defender Johan Burnell pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and work permit. Brunell, 25, enlists with TFC after five seasons with Finnish club FF Jaro, who last played in the Ykkonen, the country's second tier.
