LA Galaxy sign goalkeeper Jon Kempin

The LA Galaxy announced Friday the club has signed former Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Jon Kempin, bringing on the 23-year-old shot-stopper for his eighth MLS campaign after having featured just nine times in the last seven years.

Kempin had originally joined Sporting KC during its Kansas City Wizard days, signing on a Homegrown Player contract in 2010. However, after failing to secure much playing time over the following seven seasons, Kempin had his contract option declined at the end of 2016, and now joins the Galaxy on a free transfer.

"Jon is a young player with potential that can provide us with valuable depth at the goalkeeper position," LA Galaxy general manager Pete Vagenas said in a club-issued statement. "He impressed during our preseason this year and we are excited to bring him on board."

He joins Curt Onalfo's side ahead of the start of the 2017 MLS campaign and will compete with first-choice Brian Rowe as well as Clement Diop for a spot between the posts, as Dan Kennedy is reportedly set to depart the club.
