Toronto FC re-signs Benoit Cheyrou

Toronto FC announced Wednesday it has re-signed French midfielder Benoit Cheyrou, who spent the last two seasons with the Reds.

"Benoit has been an important player for Toronto FC over the past two seasons, and he is part of our core group," TFC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a club-issued statement.

"His wealth of experience has helped us throughout the season in both the regular season and playoffs in what was a historic year for the club. We are very excited to bring him back to Toronto FC.”

The 35-year-old has featured 52 times for Toronto FC, notching three goals with nine assists in all competitions. He originally joined the club on Jan. 29 of 2015, and proved a vital piece in the 2015 season.

Cheyrou was reduced to a bench role last season in Greg Vanney's side, though, filling in when Michael Bradley was away on international duty.

The addition of Armando Cooper later in the season saw him further reduced in his role, but with Will Johnson leaving to join Orlando City, the former Marseille man could prove an important figure for Vanney's midfield depth.

The club didn't provide specifics on the length of Cheyrou's new contract, or his salary. Last season, he made $159,333, according to the MLS Players Union.
