Arena names 23-man USMNT squad for Serbia, Jamaica friendlies

USA Today Sports / Reuters

New U.S. men's national team manager Bruce Arena has selected his first 23-man squad ahead of a pair of upcoming friendlies against Serbia and Jamaica, with almost every player currently plying their trade in Major League Soccer.

San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham, FC Dallas center-back Walker Zimmerman, Chicago Fire midfielder Dax McCarty, and New England Revolution forward Juan Agudelo highlight some of Arena's new choices, while experienced regulars like Michael Bradley, Jermaine Jones, and Graham Zusi remain in the squad, though the latter is listed as a defender.

Santos Laguna defender Jorge Villafana and fellow left full-back DaMarcus Beasley, currently unattached, make up the non-MLS contingent in the squad, however, Beasley is reportedly negotiating a return to the Houston Dynamo.

The squad was whittled down from a 31-man January training camp called up in Carson and Arena says he's happy with the quality of his team.

"I have been extremely pleased with the effort and progress we have seen throughout the January Camp," Arena said. "The entire pool of players has performed well and has made our roster decisions very difficult.

"We are excited to take the next step and look forward to the game against Serbia in San Diego."

The upcoming fixture against Serbia could be a milestone moment for Toronto FC forward Jozy Altidore, who would earn his 100th cap with an appearance in that match.
