Real Salt Lake's attempt to sign Landon Donovan has fallen through.

Donovan was reportedly offered a contract to join Real Salt Lake in December after deciding he would not return to the L.A. Galaxy.

However, Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated reports that a move to Utah will not come to fruition after Real Salt Lake submitted a "lucrative offer."

Though Donovan had not acknowledged Real Salt Lake's interest, the club's general manager Craig Waibel admitted that talks had taken place with the former United States international

But, in an interview with Christopher Kamrani of the Salt Lake Tribune, Waibel warned that the two sides were far from reaching an agreement.

"We've never gotten in a conversation claiming we're signing a 27-year-old Landon Donovan," Waibel said.

"All the conversations have been very realistic on his fit within our club and very realistic about the expectations involved, but as I've said, there's so many details that go into any contract that it's far from done."

Donovan - who scored one goal during nine appearances with the Galaxy last season - allegedly opted not to return to Los Angeles after the team refused to offer him a Designated Player contract.
