Report: Will Johnson heading to Orlando City

Free-agent midfielder Will Johnson will not be returning to Toronto FC next season, as a source tells Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press the combative 29-year-old has agreed to a deal with Orlando City.

An official announcement is expected later today, according to Davidson.

Johnson, who joined his hometown club in December of last year, was an important cog in the Toronto FC midfield early in the season, his presence adding both defensive cover and a tenacity that allowed more attack-minded teammates to roam the centre of the pitch with added freedom.

The Canadian saw his campaign derailed somewhat when he suffered a tibial plateau fracture while scoring a last-gasp goal that saw the Reds capture the Amway Canadian Championship over Vancouver in June.

He was able to overcome the ailment, however, and ultimately went on to make 23 appearances for the club, helping Greg Vanney's side make a run all the way to the MLS Cup final; Johnson slotted home one of the penalties during TFC's ill-fated shootout against the Seattle Sounders.

A 10-year veteran of MLS who has spent time with Real Salt Lake, Chicago, and Portland, the switch to sunny Orlando will reunite Johnson with former bench boss Jason Kreis, whom he worked with during his time at the Rio Tinto Stadium.
