Portland Timbers are in the market for a new centre-half, and Steven Taylor a new club after last year's MLS champs and the former Newcastle tough-tackler parted ways by mutual consent Thursday.

"We appreciate Steven’s contributions while in Portland and wish him all the best," Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson told the club's official website.

Taylor, who joined the Cascadians in August after more than a decade with the Magpies, made just nine league appearances for Caleb Porter's lot, scoring his lone goal in a 4-2 victory over rivals Seattle Sounders

The defender released a statement on Portland's website, thanking the club for his time in Oregon, saying, "I'd like to thank everyone at Portland Timbers for an unforgettable few months on and off the field.

"While I will be returning to the other side of the Atlantic, I wish the Timbers and their supporters all the best as I continue following them and supporting them from afar."

The 30-year-old London-born defender was named to Portland's non-protected list of players for Tuesday's expansion draft between Atlanta United FC and Minnesota United FC. Taylor was not selected.
