The LA Galaxy have acquired the rights to midfielder Jermaine Jones from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, setting up a presumed signing of the U.S. national team veteran.

The Galaxy will send their highest first-round pick - as of 24 hours before the SuperDraft - to the Rapids, along with a conditional second-round pick in the 2018 draft.

"This was a difficult decision, considering what Jermaine brought to the Rapids during his time with us," Rapids president Tim Hinchey said in a club-issued statement. "We would like to thank Jermaine for his hard work and service to the club, and wish him the best of luck in the future."

Jones joined MLS in 2014 when he signed for the New England Revolution after bursting into the U.S. soccer picture during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He was then traded to the Rapids before the 2016 season, in which he made just 13 appearances, scoring three goals and recording three assists.

Injuries and suspension hampered Jones throughout the season, and the Rapids thus parted ways with the 35-year-old defensive midfielder.

The Galaxy, who announced Curt Onalfo as their new head coach, are in need of midfield options now that Steven Gerrard has left the club and will not return in 2017.
