Report: Mastroeni signs new 3-year contract as Colorado boss

Pablo Mastroeni could take his managerial tenure with the Colorado Rapids into 2019 after inking a new contract at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, reports ESPN FC's Jeff Carlisle.

The former United States international's previous deal expired at the end of 2016, but it's understood the fresh terms come with a three-year agreement. Mastroeni spearheaded a second-placed finish in the Western Conference this past season, before Colorado was eliminated by eventual winners, the Seattle Sounders, in the conference final.

Mastroeni endured a tough start in Commerce City when he took the reins in 2014, but the acquisitions of Shkelzen Gashi and veteran pairing Tim Howard and Jermaine Jones helped the gaffer forge an experienced, defensively stout side that conceded a league-low 32 goals in 2016.

This reversal in fortune saw the formerly mustachioed Mastroeni finish runner-up as MLS Coach of the Year behind FC Dallas handler and ex-Colorado boss Oscar Pareja.

As a player, Mastroeni represented the Rapids with great distinction, starring and captaining during their 2010 MLS Cup triumph, and making 361 league appearances overall.
