The Vancouver Whitecaps announced Wednesday the club has parted ways with star midfielder Pedro Morales, opting not to exercise the 2017 option in the Chilean's contract.

The 31-year-old joined the Whitecaps as a Designated Player at the start of the 2014 season and has since made 85 league appearances, scoring 25 goals and recording 22 assists.

"I'd like to give thanks on behalf of my family and I for these three amazing years, which without a doubt have made an impact on my life as a person and my career as a football player," Morales wrote in an open letter posted to the club's official website.

"I have finished my time as a Whitecaps FC player and I'm truly grateful and honored for the opportunity I had to be a part of this amazing club."

With the Whitecaps missing out on the 2016 postseason, the club is expected to rebuild with head coach Carl Robinson remaining in charge. The Welsh tactician bid his once-star man adieu in typically respectful fashion.

"Since the day Pedro joined our club he has been an excellent professional and one of the most naturally gifted players I have ever coached," Robinson said. "We are thankful for his contributions to the club and city, and wish him all the best."
