Toronto FC tops Montreal in goal fest to reach 1st-ever MLS Cup

Substitutes Benoit Cheyrou and Tosaint Ricketts delivered the two biggest goals in Toronto FC history Wednesday night, each scoring in the first half of extra time to secure a manic 5-2 victory (7-5 on aggregate) over rival Montreal Impact.

Toronto edged out a game that swung back and forth, the implications changing with every strike that hit the back of each net.

Over the course of the two legs in this wild Eastern Conference final, the two bitter foes buried 12 goals combined.

They needed 30 additional minutes to decide this series, which will go down as the best two-legged playoff matchup in all 21 years of MLS.

And it was Cheyrou - an emergency replacement for the injured Sebastian Giovinco - who powered a header that gave TFC a conclusive 6-5 lead on aggregate.

Ricketts added to the mayhem at BMO Field when he slid in for a cathartic consolation marker.

Toronto will now host its first-ever MLS Cup final against the Seattle Sounders on Dec. 10.

The theatrics of the first leg proved ominous in a rivalry that went right to the wire. Greg Vanney's lot overcame a nightmarish start in last week's opener to grab two vital away goals and put TFC in a position to make the showpiece event.

Former TFC man Dominic Oduro - who joked beforehand that Toronto would need a refund policy for all the MLS Cup tickets that went on presale - jabbed his ex again with an uncontested strike on 24 minutes.

The hometown Reds roared back with a pair of goals from speed demon Armando Cooper and the ever-influential Jozy Altidore.

With his near-post header, Altidore became the first player to score in five consecutive games in a single MLS postseason.

Montreal poacher Ignacio Piatti and Nick Hagglund traded tallies to send the match into extra time, and the rest is truly history.

The 12 goals scored across the two legs is the highest total of any playoff series, according to ESPN researcher Paul Carr.

TFC is also the first team to reach an MLS Cup after losing the first leg of a conference final.
