Galaxy confirm Keane exit

The LA Galaxy announced Thursday evening that striker Robbie Keane will be leaving the record five-time MLS champ when his contract expires at the end of the year.

Keane, 36, leaves the Galaxy with three MLS Cup victories, 92 goals, 51 assists, 26 match-winners, 21 multi-goal outings, and four trebles to his name after a decorated six-season spell with the club.

"I can confirm that after five fantastic years I will be leaving the LA Galaxy," the 146-time capped international told the club's official website. "It's been a privilege to have played my part in the history of such a great club and I leave with memories that will stay with me forever.

"Winning three MLS Cups, scoring over 100 goals for the club and being named as 2014 MVP are all achievements that I will look back on with pride, it's been an incredible experience, I've truly loved every minute of my time at LA Galaxy."

Ireland's all-time leading scorer arrived in the MLS on the heels of a celebrated tenure with the likes of Tottenham, Leeds United, and Coventry City only to take the North American top flight by storm with his penchant for timely goals and his trademark celebration.

In all of his six seasons with the club, Keane scored no fewer than 10 goals, earning LA Galaxy Player of the Year four campaigns on the trot and the MLS MVP award in 2014. This season, Keane became the MLS' fastest player to 100 goals, capping off a stunning spell with the club.

Keane's exit leaves a gaping void in L.A.'s attack and a vacated Designated Player spot that gaffer Bruce Arena is certain to fill in the offseason.

"I would like to thank everyone at the Galaxy including the board, manager, and all of my teammates for their incredible support during my time in L.A.," Keane added.

"Finally, I would like to thank the most important people at the club: the fans. Thank you for welcoming me as one of your own and for helping to make L.A. such a special place for both me and my family."
