MLS Conference Semifinals Leg 2: Toronto FC, Sounders set to advance

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

The MLS playoff Conference Semifinals will come to a close Sunday with the second leg of this four-match series concluding, advancing four teams while eliminating four others.

The Montreal Impact, LA Galaxy, Toronto FC, and Seattle Sounders go into the second leg with wins in their respective home first legs while having conceded no away goals. The New York Red Bulls, Colorado Rapids, New York City FC, and FC Dallas have one last chance to salvage their seasons.

Here's how things look for the second leg:

New York Red Bulls vs. Montreal Impact

  • First leg: Montreal Impact 1-0 New York Red Bulls
  • Montreal advances with: win or draw
  • Red Bulls advance with: a two-goal win or more, 1-0 win and penalties

Matteo Mancosu's incredible second-half rocket goal separated these two sides at Stade Saputo, and while the job is by no means finished, Montreal will be happy to have kept the Red Bulls off the score sheet in the first leg.

Bradley Wright-Phillips will look to make amends for his woeful miss against Montreal with a goal or two, though a steadfast Impact defense led by Laurent Ciman will present quite the challenge.

The Impact could be hampered by a hamstring injury to Mancosu, but may also see Didier Drogba return from his back injury.

Colorado Rapids vs. LA Galaxy

  • First leg: LA Galaxy 1-0 Colorado Rapids
  • Galaxy need: win or draw
  • Rapids need: a two-goal win or more, 1-0 win and penalties

The Rapids have as straightforward a path as the Red Bulls in advancing out of the semifinals, with just a one-goal margin to make up. However, it won't be an easy task as the LA Galaxy are a difficult opponent, even on the road.

Jermaine Jones could be ready to start, which will be a welcome addition to Pablo Mastroeni's side, but with Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane raring to go, this second leg won't be any easier than the first.

Expect a low-scoring match that will likely end in a draw. The Galaxy finished the season with the most tied matches, and the Rapids scored just 39 goals (second-fewest) while conceding the fewest goals as well at 32.

New York City FC vs. Toronto FC

  • First leg: Toronto FC 2-0 New York City FC
  • TFC needs: win, draw, 1-0/2-1 loss, any two-goal loss with an away goal
  • NYCFC needs: a three-goal win or more, 2-0 win and penalties

David Villa avoided a suspension despite kicking out at Armando Cooper and Sebastian Giovinco was snubbed for the MVP prize despite leading the league in combined points. For Toronto FC captain Michael Bradley, none of that matters whatsoever.

Instead, the Reds are solely focused on maintaining a two-goal lead over New York City FC at Yankee Stadium and advancing into the Eastern Conference Championship.

The venue hasn't been particularly kind to Toronto, and NYCFC may even welcome Andrea Pirlo back from injury, so it could be a clash of stars in the Big Apple on Sunday.

FC Dallas vs. Seattle Sounders

  • First leg: Seattle Sounders 3-0 FC Dallas
  • Seattle needs: win, draw, any one or two-goal loss, any three-goal loss with an away goal
  • Dallas needs: a four-goal win or more, 3-0 win and penalties

If any team's goose is cooked in the 2016 playoffs, it's FC Dallas' after a 3-0 loss against Seattle in the first leg has made the situation at Toyota Stadium dire.

FC Dallas looks disjointed without Mauro Diaz pulling the strings in midfield, but this team should still be feared - the Supporters' Shield winner remains one of the most dangerous sides in the league.

That being said, expect the Sounders to cruise into the Western Conference Championship.
