Impact president Saputo: Drogba issue 'resolved'

Didier Drogba and the Montreal Impact have made peace.

The Ivorian striker was dropped from the squad for the 2-2 draw against Toronto FC this past weekend after refusing to accept a spot on the bench, but club president Joey Saputo said in a statement Tuesday that the two sides have come to an agreement over his role with the club heading into the playoffs.

"We met with Didier. The situation has been resolved to the club’s satisfaction," Saputo's statement read. "Didier has accepted to assume the role that the head coach sees fit while contributing to the success of this club moving forward. When he came to Montreal, Didier said he came here to win, and he still has the same objective.

"Our main priority now is to focus on the last game of the season and the upcoming playoffs. With the players and the leadership that we have on this team, we are convinced that we can make a run at the MLS Cup."

Drogba, 38, has endured an injury-riddled 2016 campaign, making just 22 appearances; he's turned that playing time into 10 goals and six assists, however, and when he wants to is clearly still capable of being a dominant force for the Canadian club.

Bench boss Mauro Biello will now need to figure out how to best utilize the former Chelsea superstar going into the playoffs, with journeyman Italian Matteo Mancosu and 23-year-old Michael Salazar offering the only true competition for the role Drogba previously held a monopoly over.
